Some Advice For Salmon Fishing

Posted on: 8 March 2022

Are you looking forward to going salmon fishing? If so, then you want to set yourself up for success. While the act of fishing is great, it's even better when you can go home with a nice catch at the end of the day. Here are some helpful tips you can follow to have a great time and increase your chances of going home with a nice dinner:

Take time to fully prepare

One of the things that can turn a relaxing salmon fishing trip into a stressful one is to get to your destination only to find you forgot something. It may be something as simple as the hat you were planning to wear, or it can be something more important and will have to make a trip to the bait store before you can start fishing. This is why it's so important to take the extra time to go through everything and make sure all the things you want and need to bring are packed.

Make sure you bring sharp hooks

When you are going out salmon fishing, you want to make sure you bring sharp hooks. Salmon have very thick jawlines, so having dull hooks may ruin your day. When you have nice and sharp hooks, it increases your chances of bringing in that catch.

Bring the right bait for the job

If you want salmon, then you have to attract salmon. People tend to have their own thoughts on the best bait to use and it can differ from one person to another. However, some of the types of bait that tend to work the best with salmon include:

  • Herring cut bait

  • Anchovies

  • Alewives

  • Silversides

  • Roe bags

  • Flashtrap spinners

Use a flasher

Since salmon tend to like the deeper and therefore darker waters, you need something extra to help attract them to your bait. This is why you want to be sure you use flashers when fishing for salmon. Different people have their own opinions regarding the right color of spinner to use, so you may want to try a few different colors out and see which one works the best for you.

Have the right attitude

The best thing to do in order to ensure your day is a success is to plan on spending the day enjoying the weather and nature. This way, you will have a great day, whether you catch very few fish or you catch more than you could have expected.
